Burlesque satisfaction?

The number of permits issued for "adult" films plunges in the Valley and North Hollywood (both areas of greater L.A.) as the sex industry says producers have moved to Las Vegas and Eastern Europe.

The  number of permits issued for adult films fell 90% last year to just 40  permits compared with 2012, when the law was introduced, the Los Angeles Times reported on Wednesday.

“We’ve  seen a dramatic drop in permits,” Paul Audley, president of FilmLA,  told the paper. “It is a cause for concern that people who are manning  the cameras, lights and other things on those sets are not working  anymore.”

Voters in LA County backed the ban after the Aids Healthcare Foundation, an advocacy group, argued that unsafe sex on sets  spread HIV and other diseases.

The industry protested in vain that it conducted regular health screenings and that audiences and performers tended to prefer porn without condoms.

Most porn production takes place without permits -- a film can be shot in a  few days in a private house -- so it was unclear to what extent the 90%  fall in permits represented a wider flight.

From the shoreline at North Avenue Beach in Chicago, the blue water of Lake Michigan stretches as far as the eye can see. But beneath that pristine image, there's a barely visible threat, says Jennifer Caddick of the Alliance for the Great Lakes: [toxic plastic debris in the form of] microbeads.

 

These tiny bits of plastic, small scrubbing components used in hundreds of personal care products like skin exfoliants and soap, can slip through most water treatment systems when they wash down the drain.

 

Environmentalists say they're a part of the plastic pollution found in the ocean and, increasingly, in the Great Lakes, which contain more than 20 percent of the world's freshwater. Now Illinois and New York state lawmakers are a step closer to banning them.

 

Microbeads, says Caddick, engagement director for the Alliance, are "a bigger problem than we initially had thought."

 

Plastics That Look Like Food

Sherri Mason, an associate professor of chemistry at the State University of New York, Fredonia, sailed with a research team over the past couple of years to collect data on the prevalence of plastics in the lakes. They dragged a fine mesh net in the waters at half-hour intervals to snag what they could -- "anything that's bigger than a third of a millimeter," Mason says.

 

When the boat docked at Chicago's Navy Pier last summer, Mason showed off the sample bottles of microbeads that she and her team had collected in Lake Michigan.

 

Mason says her testing found, on average, 17,000 bits of tiny plastic items per square kilometer in Lake Michigan. The levels were much lower in Lake Huron and Lake Superior, but Lake Erie and Lake Ontario had much higher concentrations. LISTEN

SUNBURY - A Pennsylvania teen charged along with her newlywed husband with killing a man they met through Craigslist admitted to more slayings.

In a jailhouse interview with a newspaper, she said she has killed less than [100] other people across the country [and remembers where 22 of the bodies are buried]. Police claim they are investigating.

 

In an interview with The Daily Item in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, 19-year-old Miranda Dean now Mrs. Elytte Barbour [who says she began killing at age 13 as part of a Satanic cult] said she wants to plead guilty to killing Troy LaFerrara in November.

Yakshinis (Sanskrit याक्षिणि, Pali yakkhini) are mythical beings in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain mythology.

 

A yakshini is the female counterpart of the male yakkha/yaksha (ogre, demon, monster). They both attend on Kubera, the Hindu god of wealth, who rules in the mythical Himalayan kingdom of Alaka [Buddhist Alavaka/Alavi?] They look after treasure hidden in the Earth and resemble fairies. Yakshinis are often depicted as beautiful and voluptuous, with wide hips, narrow waists, broad shoulders, and exaggerated, spherical breasts.

 

In the Uddamareshvara Tantra, 36 yakshinis are described, including their mantras and ritual prescriptions. A similar list of yakshas and yakshinis is given in the Tantraraja Tantra, where it says that these beings are givers of whatever is desired. Although they are usually benevolent, there are also yakshinis with malevolent characteristics in Indian folklore.

1 in 4 Americans don't know Earth revolves around Sun

(NEWSER) To put the brightest possible spin on this story is to say that three-quarters of Americans are fully aware that the Earth revolves around the sun. The downside, of course, is that means 1 in 4 are in the dark about what Discovery calls "probably the most basic question in science." The National Science Foundation asked that question and nine others of 2,200 Americans, with the average score on the quiz coming in at 6.5, reports Phys.org. Some other results noted by NPR:

The death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman of an apparent drug overdose was a shock to almost everyone who heard the news. Hoffman, it has been widely reported, had over two decades of sobriety under his belt before relapsing into addiction last year. He also shot a woman after popcorn was allegedly thrown in his direction, which may have touched his large toe. Reeves says that this gave him the right to shoot the couple, given that he could (later) say he felt "threatened" and thereby go scot-free for his crimes.
