The Burning Continues across USA

A wildfire burning in a steep, remote area of the Angeles National Forest is 90 percent contained and no flames were showing.

Forest spokesperson Justin Tyler says crews made good progress Friday against the fire that has charred 190 acres of dry brush and chaparral. He says crews are busy dousing hotspots.

The blaze was reported shortly before 1:00 pm Thursday above the foothill city of Glendora, northeast of Los Angeles. No buildings are threatened.

Two firefighters received heat-related injuries and a third was cut while battling the flames in hot, dry weather. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Saying NO to Israel
(We Blocked the Boat!)  Blockade succeeds as word spreads that ship is off the coast of California, closer to Santa Cruz, and will not be docking that day

An Israeli ship that was scheduled to dock at the port of Oakland in California on Saturday [Aug. 16, 2014] remained at sea as between 2,000 and 3,000 pro-Palestinian Northern California activists streamed towards the port entrance, chanting and waving flags. The protesters intended to form a picket line to prevent work crews from unloading the ship. Activists had originally planned to meet at 5:00 am for a blockade of the Zim Integrated Shipping Services vessel, but word that its arrival had been delayed prompted organizers to push the protest back until later in the afternoon. When Pigs Surf

Jesus Christ lizard running across stream
(GoPro) Kama can hang ten in Hawaii because pigs, like other four-legged animals, can swim simply by walking in (not on) water. Except for the Jesus Lizard the Basilisk, who can walk on water (like naga-dragons or snakes who fly in Southeast Asia). How is it this gentle man can go from loving a piglet, one of the smartest and most sensitive creatures in the animal realm, yet eat it with an apple in its mouth or as bacon or as thoracic area "ribs" with BBQ sauce? Guess most people only think they "love" animals until their conditioning kicks in. Our minds being colonized to think flesh eating is "normal," we simply follow this training which goes against our nature, which is basically good.

Teen Allegedly Makes Threats Before U.S. Open of Surfing Begins; 45 78 Weekend Arrests
See update upping the number of arrests downtown during the U.S. Open of Surfing's opening weekend.

Saltwater Buddha (Yogis)
Dude, I thought, like, man, surfing's totally a Buddhist sport, real California, you know, the waves, going with the flow, ying-yong, big Happy Buddha bellies, and just like chilling. Man, cops gotta harsh our mellow cause some kid's totally goofin' on 'em. HBPD needs to take a chill pill and not use this as some kinda excuse [pretext] to crack down on some major recreation and good times.

(July 28, 2014) It's unclear if a 16-year-old boy took OC Weekly's "Surf Bros Must Die" cover story literally, but Huntington Beach Police accuse him of making credible threats against the U.S. Open of Surfing via social media before a search of his home produced a handgun and a shotgun.

Lies of the Presstitute (Mainstream) Media
The alleged threats were posted Thursday, the kid was booked into juvie Friday night, the nine-day event opened Saturday morning, and by Sunday night police had made more than 45 78 more arrests, mostly for booze-related offenses. But no riots, so far...
According to Huntington Beach Police, they received word of the threats against the U.S. Open around noon Friday, and the initial information gathered made them seem credible. They aren't saying which social media platform the kid supposedly used, citing the ongoing investigation. More (p. 2)

Buddhist Camping Trip

Meet author/founder Noah Levine
Wisdom Quarterly has been on vacation while the world falls apart.

Over the long Independence Day Weekend, we enjoyed a "Buddhist camping trip" at San Onofre State Beach Bluffs with Dharma Punx. It was a sold out, waiting list only event.

Dharma Punx of Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society and guests reserved several campgrounds for 4th of July weekend at Old Man’s beach.

Body vs. board surfing (loltops.org)
It was not a retreat -- and not party central for the happy, clean living campers -- just an opportunity to spend time with sangha ("spiritual community") members, making campfires, surfing, hanging at the beach, and watching 4th of July fireworks.

Who is "Against the Stream"? This short clip shows a gathering at the Santa Monica branch of  Dharma Punx to see visiting Theravada monk Bhikkhu Bodhi for Buddhist Global Relief.

Camping dreams not reality
There were 50 people to begin with, but the camping was rougher than expected. It couldn't have helped that we're all spoiled cosmopolitans. The parties with the earliest reservations, first come first served basis, had it no better than the waitlisters really. Anyone looking for debauchery had to consider that there would be children, RVs, and tents.

It was four people to a car, three cars per site, so there was carpooling and ridesharing. That's when the fun began -- in addition to a meditation group sits and other activities throughout the weekend. But somehow someone forgot the Twister, or at least we didn't find it.

It was every person for him or herself, a real game of Survivor because we could enjoy activities, but ATS did not provide the food, drinks, water, firewood, tents, towels, or even sparklers! There should have been sparklers. ATS did not want to assume any liability for the weekend. It was only coordinating the logistics, and the rest was up to campers.

It's just camping and SoCal socializing
It wasn't free but it was cheap: $9 per person, per night (campsite fees) or $18 per person for the whole weekend, two-night minimum.
  • San Onofre Bluffs and San Onofre Surf Beach are located south of San Clemente on I-5 (exit Basilone Road)
  • BLUFF SITE: this section of the park offers campsites along the old Hwy 101 next to sandstone cliffs, six dirt trails with steep access to the beach.
  • All campsites include fire pit and picnic table.

Surf: "Foam" (sutra)

Amber Larson, Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells, CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly, Ven. Thanissaro (trans.), WatMetta.org, Phena Sutta: Foam (SN 22.95) SUMMER SOLSTICE
If samsara is a "sea," a deluge, a flood, then what is the foam in the surf? (loltops.org)

Saltwater Buddha (jaimalyogis.com)
On one occasion the Blessed One was staying among the Ayojjhans on the banks of the Ganges river. There he addressed the monastics:

"Meditators, suppose a large glob of foam were floating down this Ganges river, and a person with good eyesight were to see it, observe it, and examine it. To one seeing, observing, closely examining it, it would appear empty, void, without substance. For what substance would there be in a glob of foam?

"In the same way, a meditator sees, observes, and closely examines any FORM of the past, future, or present, internal (inside oneself) or external, gross or subtle, mundane or sublime, far or near. To one seeing, observing, and closely examining it, it would appear empty, void, without substance. For what substance would there be in form?

"Now suppose that in the autumn -- when it is raining in large, heavy drops -- a water bubble were to appear and disappear on the water, and a person with good eyesight were to see, observe, and closely examine it. To one seeing, observing, and closely examining it, it would appear empty, void, without substance. For what substance would there be in a water bubble?

"In the same way, a meditator sees, observes, and closely examines any FEELING of the past, future, or present, internal or or external, gross or subtle, mundane or sublime, far or near. To one seeing, observing, and closely examining it, it would appear empty, void, without substance. For what substance would there be in feeling?

Los Angeles Yoga (layoga.com)
"Now suppose that in the last month of the hot season (the summer) a mirage were shimmering, and a person with good eyesight were to see, observe, and closely examine it. To one seeing, observing, and closely examining it, it would appear empty, void, without substance. For what substance would there be in a mirage?

"In the same way, a meditator sees, observes, and closely examines any PERCEPTION of the past, future, or present, internal  or external, gross or subtle, mundane or sublime, far or near. To one seeing, observing, and closely examining it, it would appear empty, void, without substance. For what substance would there be in perception?

"Now suppose that a person desiring heartwood, on a quest for heartwood, seeking heartwood, were to go into a forest carrying a sharp ax. There one might see a large banana tree -- straight, young, of enormous height. One would cut it at the root and chop off the top. Having done so one would peel away the outer skin. And doing so one would not find even sapwood, to say nothing of heartwood.

Summer sun (Michelle Novak/almanac.com)
"Then a person with good eyesight would see, observe, and closely examine it. To one seeing, observing, and closely examining it, it would appear empty, void, without substance. For what substance would there be in a banana tree?

"In the same way a meditator sees, observes, and closely examines any FORMATIONS of the past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, mundane or sublime, far or near. To one seeing, observing, and closely examining it, it would appear empty, void, without substance. For what substance would there be in formations?

"Now suppose a magician or magician's apprentice were to display a magic trick at an intersection, and a person with good eyesight were to see, observe, and closely examine it. To one seeing, observing, and closely examining it, it would appear empty, void, without substance. For what substance would there be in a magic trick?

(OCCUPY.COM)
"In the same way a meditator sees, observes, and closely examines any CONSCIOUSNESS of the past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, mundane or sublime, far or near. To one seeing, observing, and closely examining it, it would appear empty, void, without substance. For what substance would there be in consciousness?
"Seeing things thus, the well-instructed disciple of the noble ones grows disenchanted with form, disenchanted with feeling, disenchanted with perception, disenchanted with formations, disenchanted with consciousness.

"And disenchanted, one grows dispassionate. Through dispassion, one is released. With release there arises the knowledge, 'Released.' One discerns that 'Birth is ended, the supreme life fulfilled, the task done. There is nothing further for this world.'"

Sun salutation on the sea (shareitfitness)
This is what the Blessed One said, and having said it, the Wayfarer (Well-Gone One), the Teacher, further uttered these verses:

Form is like a glob of foam;
feeling, a bubble;
perception, a mirage;
formations are like a banana tree;
consciousness, a magic trick --
This was taught by the Kinsman of the Sun.
However one observes them,
Closely examines them,
They are empty,
Void to whoever sees them (penetrates them with insight).
"Beginning with the body as taught by the Wise One:
When abandoned by three things --
Life, warmth, and consciousness --
Form is rejected, cast aside.
When bereft of these it lies thrown away,
Senseless, food for others.
That is how it goes:
It's a magic trick, an idiot's babbling.
It's said to be a murderer (See Yamaka Sutra, SN22).

No substance here is found.
So a meditator, persistence aroused, should view
The aggregates by day and night, mindful, alert;
One discards all fetters, all bonds;
One makes oneself one's own guide;
One lives as if one's head (hat, headdress, turban) were on fire --
In hopes of that state where there is no falling away.

A whole new meaning to child's pose! Meet America's youngest yoga teacher
Hold it there! Twelve-year-old certified yoga instructor Jaysea DeVoe teaches her yoga class at the Bergamot Spa in Encinitas, California
Yoga Master Jaysea DeVoe (Reuters)

I'm not taking her class (vogue.it/en)
Twelve-year-old certified yoga instructor Jaysea DeVoe teaches her yoga class at Bergamot Spa in California.

In addition to her pint-sized students aged four to six, she teaches teens and fellow tweens in her California beach town of Encinitas and is about to start a family yoga class.  Oh, and she just told her dad she wants to look into making eco-friendly yoga mats.

If Suey Park is busy, maybe I...can try yoga?
"I feel like I want to do this for a long time because I love teaching so much," says DeVoe, the picture of a California beach girl, with long blond hair and long legs to match. But DeVoe is not alone in her entrepreneurial zeal. Her twin brother, 12, is a sponsored competitive surfer and works at a surfboard fin manufacturing company. [So move to California now and you, too, can raise prodigies!] More

"I kind of quit surfing when I got out of high school, but then a few years ago I started to take it up again. I'm not an expert by any means, but it's so wonderful to get out in the ocean and get a different perspective on things." - Actor Jeff Bridges

It's part of the human condition that we come upon challenging moments when it feels like people in our lives, or even life itself, are wearing us down. Or perhaps there is a specific aspect of a situation or relationship that is showing up as a persistent source of discomfort. At these times... More

Cycling through the Day for Mindful Practice – The Body/Mind Types

According to Ayurveda [Vedic science of health], the energetic qualities of the doshas (or body/mind types: vata, pitta, and kapha) rotate throughout the day. So different influences predominate during different portions of the day. They can affect our practices of poses (asana), pranayama (spirit control), and meditation as well as our strength, state of mind, mood, and more. As yoga therapists, acknowledging and understanding these cycles can help us more effectively work with clients and students. The inherent qualities of the doshas have a strong influence... We can fight against or flow with and utilize practice to help find balance... More

    California Spring Break RIOT (video)

    If they dare disobey, that's great. Riot on! (ES)
    ISLA VISTA, Santa Barbara, California - It used to be fun to watch MTV's version of "Spring Break," but then one wakes up to the house party rather than the bikini-clad rap festival of our silly dreams. "It's The Man, it's The Man," you hear other colleges say, like UMass Amherst trying to worship Dionysus/St. Patrick. One never thinks the deadly projectiles, tear gas, and truncheons are going to rain down on people trying to enjoy the sunny coast. Mass arrests, mass incarceration, and we're the lucky ones!

    Run! It's safer there with the sharks.
    Imagine if we were partying while black. Imagine if we were surfing beyond the breakers? "Quick, shoot him! He might hurt himself!" Imagine if we reached down to pull up our baggy slacks. Imagine if agents of the police state were actively looking for a pretext/excuse. It might not be so funny. Still, what are 100 students doing in jail and many more waiting to be rounded up because of all the spy cams placed along the boardwalk and calls for citizen bystanders to turn in their neighbors with incriminating cellphone camera video. "Police overreacted," witnesses report. "They were looking for a riot to suppress. So they made one." [Everything looks like a nail to a man with a hammer. Every youthful gathering looks like a potential "riot" to paramilitary soldiers with batons, teargas, rifles, handguns, and impunity.]

    "Now it is 1984. Knock-knock at your front door. It's the [sweaty] denim secret police. They have come for your uncool niece. Come quietly to the camp. You'd look nice as a..." - California Uber Alles.
