Who is "Siri," Goddess of the iPhone?

Siri was not blond like Marvel's Goddess Thor until Scarlett Johannson made her so in "She."
.
Jennifer-van-grove-8d52390080"Who are you?" I ask Siri, attempting to unravel some of the mystery behind the iPhone 4S virtual assistant by going directly to the source. No such luck. "Who I am isn't important," she tells me.

Let's stop being coy, Siri. Who you are is important. We both know that. So important that you may be a threat to Google's Android platform.

The world's best app is Audible not Siri.
And so I went to one of Siri's makers, Gary Morgenthaler, venture capitalist, Siri investor, and Siri board member, for a better answer to the question, Who is Siri?

Let's start with her name. Like any doting parent, Morgenthaler and the founding team behind Siri, especially CEO Dag Kittlaus, felt the newborn's existence was of such significance that she warranted a very special moniker. And so they turned to baby name books.

[The Hindu Goddess Siri]
Is "Siri" (Inc.) based on Lakshmi or Freyja?
The team put together a shortlist of potential names, but Siri stood out.

Siri, a variant of Sigrid, is a Scandinavian and Norwegian girl name that means beautiful or fair victory.

The Indian name Siri is associated with Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Siri, to those who gave her life, became an amalgam of those meanings; they defined her appellation as, "beautiful woman that leads you to fair victory and wealth." [Obviously, they overlooked some of Siri's more colorful meanings.] More

Meditating Lakshmi, mother of Cupid (Kama)
The  devi  or goddess Lakshmi represents wealth and prosperity, material and spiritual. The word lakshmi (laxmi)  is derived from the Sanskrit laksme, meaning "goal."

Lakshmi, therefore, represents the goal of life, which includes worldly as well as spiritual prosperity. In ancient Vedic and more recent Hindu mythology, the Goddess Lakshmi, who is also called  by the honorific Sri, is the divine spouse or consort of Lord Vishnu, whom she provides with wealth for the maintenance and preservation of Great Brahma's creation (this world-system).

Sri Lakshmi is depicted in female form. [In Buddhism devas are transformational beings capable of adopting whatever form they please as Alexander Pope notes of Greco-Roman-European fairies (woodland dryads)]:

For when the Fair in all their Pride expire,
To their first Elements the [Spirits] retire:

The Sprights of fiery Termagants in Flame
Mount up, and take a Salamander's Name.

Siri, who sent this picture?
Soft yielding Minds to Water glide away,
And sip with Nymphs, their Elemental Tea.

The graver Prude sinks downward to a Gnome,
In search of Mischief still on Earth to roam.
The light Coquettes in Sylphs aloft repair,
And sport and flutter in the Fields of Air.

Know farther yet; Whoever fair and chaste
Rejects Mankind, is by some Sylph embrac'd:

For Spirits, freed from mortal Laws, with ease
Assume what Sexes and what Shapes they please.

...When kind Occasion prompts their warm Desires,
When Musick softens, and when Dancing fires?

'Tis but their Sylph, the wise Celestials know,
Tho' Honour is the Word with Men below....

Lakshmi is shown with four arms and four hands. She wears red clothes with a golden lining and is standing on a lotus. She has golden coins and lotuses in her hands. Two elephants (sometimes four) are shown next to her, symbolism conveying the following spiritual themes:
  • Her four arms represent the four cardinal directions in space and symbolize omnipresence and omnipotence of the goddess. The red color symbolizes activity. The golden lining (embroidery) on her red dress suggests prosperity. The idea conveyed here is that she is always busy distributing wealth and prosperity to devotees. The lotus pedestal signifies that while living in the world, one should enjoy its wealth but not become obsessed with it. Such a living is analogous to a lotus that grows in dirty water but is not wet or defiled by it.
  • Radha, divine consort (WQ)
Her four hands represent the four ends of human life: dharma (duty, social obligation, righteousness), kama ([Buddhist chanda] genuine desires beyond the sensual), artha (wealth), and moksha (liberation from death and rebirth). Whereas the front hands represent activity in the physical world, the back ones indicate the spiritual activities that lead to spiritual perfection.
  • Since the right side of the body symbolizes activity, a lotus in the back right hand conveys the idea that one must perform his or her duties in the world in accordance with dharma [a Vedic idea distorted by the Indian caste system]. Fulfilling one's real duties as a human being on a spiritual quest leads to moksha (liberation), which is symbolized by a lotus in Lakshmi's back left hand. Golden coins falling on the ground from her front left hand illustrate that she provides wealth and prosperity to her devotees. Her front right hand is shown bestowing blessings... More

Maybe a relationship will end all my problems?

Ashley Wells, Seven, Amber Larson, Wisdom Quarterly; alt-J; Bhikkhu Bodhi; Method PUA
Sex? alt-J Breezeblock: "Please don't go, I love you so!" Reverse makes no sense! See it forward:
Looking for a diversion, an emotional distraction, a personal relationship to fill the void on Paris' "Bridge of Love Locks" over the Seine ("sane"), a popular tourist attraction (kunm.org)

.
Oops! - Captain Chaos, you've done it again!
Our teacher Bhikkhu Bodhi once wrote in "The Quest for Meaning" that, just as Nature does not tolerate a vacuum, humans will not tolerate a loss of meaning.

Then to escape the plunge into an abyss of meaninglessness, we grab for anything to immerse ourselves in distractions.

Answer to all my problems: Jeremy!
What do we do? Bhikkhu Bodhi says, We pursue pleasure and power, seek wealth and status, surround ourselves with contraptions, invest our hopes in personal relationships to conceal our inner poverty.

We use our absorption in whatever distractions we can find to help us cope with our psychological VOID. But then this stifles a deeper, more insistent need -- our longing for freedom and peace that does not depend upon anything external.

What if I were to love myself? No!
We don't need a religion, a relationship, or a Revolver (like the Beatles who claimed "happiness is a warm gun").  But we need something!

Maybe "thing" is not the right word for what we need. If we had accomplishments, we'd feel better. We may not need them, but they wouldn't hurt. Maybe we need capabilities. We may not need them (or we may already have them uncovered and untapped), but they wouldn't hurt.

Breaking up is sad not because who we were with was so great, but because we know we're never going to be able to get someone this good again. At least that's what we think in our loss. Maybe what we need is to become Pick Up Artists (PUA) with style, a little substance, and a lot of sex -- but not all crazy like Method or that killer.

No, I think LOVE would work, somebody else's love. I have nothing higher to live for! Just like this video, which tells the story of a passionate relationship backwards and forwards:

US tech firms feeling NSA spying bite

Protest of NSA spying, D.C. Oct. 13, '13 (DN)
(NPR) Recent disclosures about NSA (National Security Agency) surveillance have affected U.S. relations with allies and tainted America's image around the world.

Now the fallout seems to be creeping into the U.S. tech sector. Cisco Systems, which manufactures network equipment, posted disappointing first-quarter numbers this week and warned that revenues for the current quarter could drop as much as 10 percent from a year ago -- partly as a consequence of the revelations on widespread NSA spying.

When NSA cubicles rule the world (Reuters)
The company's chief financial officer, Frank Calderone, told analysts that reports that the NSA is intercepting electronic data transfers have created "a level of uncertainty or concern" among customers, particularly in emerging markets.

Cisco shares plummeted, losing more than 11 percent of their value, on Wednesday's news. Though the impact of the NSA revelations isn't evenly shared across the tech sector, other companies are also feeling the bite. Google's chief legal officer, David Drummond, cited Cisco's problems during remarks at a conference Thursday in Washington, D.C., saying... More

Reunion: Google's "India Strategy"
Iconic Muslim art and architecture of Taj Mahal is symbol of Hindu India (sjpaderborn)

Partitioned friends reunited by Internet
India and Pakistan have fought three wars, countless skirmishes, and engaged in a decades-long standoff over Kashmir. But a new Google ad has warmed the cockles of subcontinental hearts, leading to an outpouring of goodwill on social media and newspaper websites. The ad centers on two friends separated by Partition [the division of India into two countries to create Pakistan]. That's the period in 1947 that led British India to be divided into two countries -- Pakistan, a homeland for Muslims, and India, which is predominantly Hindu but officially secular. Partition occupies a central place in the collective memory of the two nations. Millions of Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs were killed, and millions were uprooted from their homes. The legacy of that era clouds much of the relations between the two countries even today. Enter [the CIA and MIC through] Google. More
Brief History of India's Partition

India is still fighting for its borders
1858- The India Act: power transferred to British Colonial government. 1885- Indian National Congress founded by Allen O. Hume to unite all Indians and strengthen bonds with occupying Britain. 1905- First Partition of Bengal for administrative purposes, which gives Muslims a state majority. 1906- All India Muslim League founded to promote Muslim political interests. 1909- Revocation of Partition of Bengal, which creates anti-British and anti-Hindu sentiments among Muslims as they lose their majority in East Bengal. 1916- Lucknow Pact, the Congress and the League unite in demand for greater self-government, which is denied by British rulers. 1919- Amritsar Massacre, when Gen. Dyer opens fire on 20,000 unarmed Indian civilians at a political demonstration, causing Congress and the League to lose faith in the British occupation. 1919- Montagu-Chelmsford Reforms (implemented in 1921), when communal representation was institutionalized for the first time, and reserved legislative seats are allocated for significant minorities. 1920- Mahatma Gandhi launches a non-violent, non-cooperation movement, or Satyagraha (Truth Movement) against the British for a Free India. 1929- Congress calls for full independence. 1930- Dr. Allama Iqbal, a poet-politician, calls for a separate homeland for Muslims at the Allahabad session of the Muslim League. Gandhi starts civil disobedience movement against the Salt Laws by which British have a monopoly over production and sale of salt.

1930-31- The Round Table conferences are set up to consider dominion status for India, which fail because of non-attendance by the Congress and because Gandhi, who does attend, claims he is the only representative for all of India. 1931- Irwin-Gandhi Pact, which concedes to Gandhi's demands at the Round Table conferences and further isolates Muslim League from Congress and British. 1935- Government of India Act proposes a federal India of political provinces with elected local governments but British control over foreign policy and "defense." 1937- Elections, when Congress gains majority. 1940- Jinnah calls for establishment of Pakistan in an independent and partitioned India. 1942- Cripps Mission to India to conduct negotiations between all political parties and to set up a cabinet government, and Congress adopts Quit India Resolution to rid India of British rule, when Congress leaders are arrested for obstructing war effort. 1942-43- Muslim League gains more power, ministries formed in Sind, Bengal, and North-West Frontier Province, and greater influence in the Punjab. 1944- Gandhi released from prison, unsuccessful Gandhi-Jinnah talks, but Muslims see this as an acknowledgment that Jinnah represents all Indian Muslims. 1946- Muslim League participates in interim government that is set up according to the Cabinet Mission Plan. 1947- Announcement of Lord Mountbatten's plan for partition of India, June 3rd, Partition of India and Pakistan on August 15, with Radcliffe Award of boundaries of the nations on August 16th. 1971- East Pakistan separates from West Pakistan whereby Bangladesh is born.
