The Israeli assault on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip has entered its fourth week. Henry Siegman, a venerable dean of American Jewish thought and president of the U.S./Middle East Project, sat down for an interview with Democracy Now! An ordained rabbi, Siegman is the former executive director of the American Jewish Congress and former executive head of the Synagogue Council of America, two of the [three] major, mainstream Jewish organizations in the U.S. [The other being the ADL.] He says the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories must end [now]. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has publicly condemned Israel for what he called its "outrageous" and "unjustifiable" shelling of a U.N. shelter in Gaza that killed 20 Palestinian civilians on Wednesday.

Many of the dead were children who were sleeping. The U.N. itself has not directly condemned Israel [how could it with the U.S. promoting and protecting Israel's war crimes?] But it admits that all available evidence points to Israel's responsibility for the terrorist act and crime against humanity.

It was the sixth time Israel had hit [targeted] a U.N. shelter since the Israeli offensive in Gaza began 24 days ago. The United Nations said it had given the coordinates of the shelter to the Israeli military 17 times prior to the attack. [They knew exactly where to aim or to definitively avoid aiming.] 

 

According to the United Nations, more than 240,000 Palestinians are now staying in U.N. shelters in Gaza. Another 200,000 Palestinians have been displaced and are staying with other overcrowded families without sufficient food or water. 

Democracy Now! is joined by Christopher Gunness, spokesperson for the the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. "UNRWA has reached a breaking point," Gunness says. "Eight of our staff have been killed. Our facilities are overwhelmed. Because of the continued displacement...we may soon find ourselves where there are tens of thousands of people in the streets of Gaza -- no food, no water, no shelter, no safety [suffering illegal collective punishment at the hands of Israel's military], frankly, after we’ve found that Israeli artillery is capable of hitting our shelters. And we’re saying: enough is enough."

Miko Peled was born into a famous and influential Israeli Jewish family in Jerusalem, who like others did his compulsory military service for Israel. His father was a prominent general in the Israeli Army exterminating Palestinians. Another relative of his was a close personal friend and schoolmate of right-wing extremist [and U.S.-groomed CIA operative] Bibi Netanyahu. 

When Peled's famous niece was killed by desperate Palestinian suicide bombers, the family may have been expected to place the fault on Palestinians. But surprisingly they blamed the "State of Israel," which violently tortures, persecutes, and pulls every dirty trick of imperial rule to drive the indigenous people from their houses and homeland. The Palestinians are so mistreated that in their sadness and desperation they would take their own lives to strike back.

Through his father's deep knowledge of the Israeli military's terrorist tactics, together with his own research, Peled realized the myths Israelis are fed about their own special history. The stories they are told make no sense under closer examination. Peled ruins the myths surrounding the supposed birth of Israel and the destruction of Palestine. He delivers truth so damning that many Jews and rabid Israel supporters in the USA are not able to bear it. The truth must not be revealed because it would make Israel the war criminals, the propagandists, the invaders and occupiers in collusion with the West laboring under a false history shrouded in Christian distortions.

He reveals such things as the fact that the original Jews expelled are not the ones claiming a "right of return," nor their descendants. He covers the double standard regarding the right of return, which is not allowed to apply to Palestinians, and dispels the myth that there has been a conflict for ages by producing proof that it was peaceful for all up until 1947, when Israel launched their illegal attacks heavily subsidized by the U.S. and UK.

Iraq is on the brink of disintegration as Sunni militants seize more towns and set their sights on the ancient Cradle of Civilization capital Baghdad. In the past few days, al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has seized control of Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, as well as Tikrit and Dhuluiya.

Afghanistan, Pakistan, India just to the right

Meanwhile, Iraqi Kurds have seized control of the northern oil city of Kirkuk. The Sunni militants now control a territory that stretches from the eastern edge of Aleppo, Syria, to Fallujah in western Iraq and now the northern city of Mosul.

Their advance has caused a humanitarian catastrophe, displacing some 500,000 people in Mosul alone -- the largest number of people ever moved in one day in world history. Mosul fell in part because U.S.-trained Iraqi forces abandoned their posts.

Early results from the largest election in the world show that India’s opposition leader Narendra Modi has won a landslide victory to become the country’s new prime minister. 

Modi is the leader of the BJP, a Hindu nationalist party (unfriendly to minority Muslims, of which there are more than 100 million in India).

"This is the result that the corporations in India wanted," says Siddhartha Deb, Indian author and journalist, noting that Modi "is very a pro-development politician, which basically means pro-business." 

 

Deb adds that Modi served as the chief minister of Gujarat state, where anti-Muslim riots in 2002 left at least 1,000 people dead. After the bloodshed, the U.S. State Department revoked Modi’s visa.

Modi has never apologized for or explained his actions at the time of the riots. Deb’s recent article in The Guardian is "India’s Dynasty-Dominated Politics Has No Space for Dissent" and his nonfiction book is The Beautiful and the Damned: A Portrait of the New India. More

Elections in Afghanistan take place this Saturday (April 5, 2014), with violence spiking strongly. On Friday, two journalists with the Associated Press were shot. One of them, the Pulitzer Prize-winning German photographer Anja Niedringhaus, was killed. The other is Kathy Gannon, author of the book I Is For Infidel, who is reportedly in stable condition.

(NPR) Recent disclosures about NSA (National Security Agency) surveillance have affected U.S. relations with allies and tainted America's image around the world.
 
Now the fallout seems to be creeping into the U.S. tech sector. Cisco Systems, which manufactures network equipment, posted disappointing first-quarter numbers this week and warned that revenues for the current quarter could drop as much as 10 percent from a year ago -- partly as a consequence of the revelations on widespread NSA spying.

India is still fighting for its borders

1858- The India Act: power transferred to British Colonial government. 1885- Indian National Congress founded by Allen O. Hume to unite all Indians and strengthen bonds with occupying Britain. 1905- First Partition of Bengal for administrative purposes, which gives Muslims a state majority. 1906- All India Muslim League founded to promote Muslim political interests. 1909- Revocation of Partition of Bengal, which creates anti-British and anti-Hindu sentiments among Muslims as they lose their majority in East Bengal. 1916- Lucknow Pact, the Congress and the League unite in demand for greater self-government, which is denied by British rulers. 1919- Amritsar Massacre, when Gen. Dyer opens fire on 20,000 unarmed Indian civilians at a political demonstration, causing Congress and the League to lose faith in the British occupation. 1919- Montagu-Chelmsford Reforms (implemented in 1921), when communal representation was institutionalized for the first time, and reserved legislative seats are allocated for significant minorities. 1920- Mahatma Gandhi launches a non-violent, non-cooperation movement, or Satyagraha (Truth Movement) against the British for a Free India. 1929- Congress calls for full independence. 1930- Dr. Allama Iqbal, a poet-politician, calls for a separate homeland for Muslims at the Allahabad session of the Muslim League. Gandhi starts civil disobedience movement against the Salt Laws by which British have a monopoly over production and sale of salt.

1930-31- The Round Table conferences are set up to consider dominion status for India, which fail because of non-attendance by the Congress and because Gandhi, who does attend, claims he is the only representative for all of India. 1931- Irwin-Gandhi Pact, which concedes to Gandhi's demands at the Round Table conferences and further isolates Muslim League from Congress and British. 1935- Government of India Act proposes a federal India of political provinces with elected local governments but British control over foreign policy and "defense." 1937- Elections, when Congress gains majority. 1940- Jinnah calls for establishment of Pakistan in an independent and partitioned India. 1942- Cripps Mission to India to conduct negotiations between all political parties and to set up a cabinet government, and Congress adopts Quit India Resolution to rid India of British rule, when Congress leaders are arrested for obstructing war effort. 1942-43- Muslim League gains more power, ministries formed in Sind, Bengal, and North-West Frontier Province, and greater influence in the Punjab. 1944- Gandhi released from prison, unsuccessful Gandhi-Jinnah talks, but Muslims see this as an acknowledgment that Jinnah represents all Indian Muslims. 1946- Muslim League participates in interim government that is set up according to the Cabinet Mission Plan. 1947- Announcement of Lord Mountbatten's plan for partition of India, June 3rd, Partition of India and Pakistan on August 15, with Radcliffe Award of boundaries of the nations on August 16th. 1971- East Pakistan separates from West Pakistan whereby Bangladesh is born.
