Possession of child pornography has finally been made illegal in Japan, but paedophilic images in manga comic books remain legal.

Japan on Wednesday finally fell into line with other major developed countries and made the possession of child pornography illegal. But the sometimes graphic images of pedophilia in manga comic books remain legal.
 
The upper house of parliament voted overwhelmingly for a bill revising laws under which only the production and distribution of child pornography had been banned.

["Torture" is defined by international treaties to which the Holy See is apparently a signatory, or the court might not have any say over their crimes against humanity.

Hundreds of thousands of people filled St. Peter's Square [in the Holy See] and the streets of Rome on Sunday to witness the extraordinary sight of two popes -- one reigning and one retired -- declaring two of their predecessors as saints.

Most Catholics around the world are celebrating the sainthood of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII. [Two groups are conspicuously absent from that list, purists who recognize the anti-Catholic violations by the extremely popular Pope John Paul II and victims of child molestation or to put it more palatably "clerical sexual abuse" often involving homosexual rape.] The historic canonization this weekend has stirred controversy for some victims of the clergy sex abuse scandal. Pope John Paul II is widely credited with helping melt down the Iron Curtain, traveling the world, and supporting oppressed people. Officials with the L.A. Archdiocese said he is particularly popular in Los Angeles, where 75 percent of parishioners are Latino. They say Pope John Paul II visited Mexico more than any other country besides Poland, his homeland. The ceremony was the first time two pontiffs -- John XXIII and John Paul II -- were made saints at the same time. The AP says:

"Francis recited the saint-making formula in Latin, saying that after deliberating, consulting, and praying for divine assistance 'we declare and define Blessed John XXIII and John Paul II be saints and we enroll them among the saints, decreeing that they are to be venerated as such...'"

Pope Francis was joined by emeritus Pope Benedict XVI, who "retired" [or was chased out pending indictment for crimes against humanity and banking irregularities at the Vatican bank under his tenure and his long-time affiliation as head of the Office of the Inquisition under the previous Pope John Paul II] last year.

(History) Using war to create one world-religion: Saint, Roman Emperor "Constantine the Great" (Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus, 272-337 AD) converted many to Christianity by killing those who refused. Co-Emperor Licinius issued the Edict of Milan in 313, proclaiming religious tolerance for the empire. Constantine vanquished Licinius during a civil war and went on killing. The story revealed in "Constantine's Sword" is shocking. It reveals the Holy Roman Catholic Church's involvement in Germany's attempted take over of the world.

Within two weeks of Adolf Hitler coming to full power in March 1933, the Vatican's Foreign Minister Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli (Vatican Secretary of State, who went on to become Pope Pious XII) sent the new Fuhrer warm greetings.

The same robe that had come into the Gospels as proof that the Messiah had come. That robe had become the centre of the celebration of the church's treaty with Hitler.

Over the next three weeks more than two million pilgrims poured into Trier to see the robe, now the symbol of the Nazi alliance of church and state. Cardinal Pacelli went on to become Pope Pious the 12th. Whereas it may be unfair to call him "Hitler's Pope," it is fair to call him "Hitler's Cardinal (who became a pope)."

"NO WAR IS HOLY"

"Constantine's Sword" is a historical documentary on the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Jews. Directed and produced by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Oren Jacoby, the film was inspired by former priest James P. Carroll's 2001 book Constantine's Sword.

It is the story of author and former Catholic priest James P. Carroll's journey to uncover the roots of war. Carroll, whose father Joseph Carroll was a famous U.S. Air Force general, implies that there has been a relationship between religiously-inspired violence and war.

This has been taking place beginning with the adoption of Christianity by the genocidal Holy Roman Emperor Constantine I in 312 AD.

Constantine was convinced that he had won a battle because he had followed the instructions of a vision to inscribe a sign of the cross (labarum) on the shields of his imperial Christian soldiers. In Carroll's view, this event marked the beginning of an unholy alliance between the military and the Church.

Carroll focuses on Catholic and evangelical anti-Judaism and invokes the cross as a symbol of the long history of xenophobic Christian violence against Jews and non-Christians, from the Crusades through the Roman Inquisition and the creation of the Jewish ghettoes, to the Holocaust (the "whole burnt," which some deny, not to be confused with the Israeli Catastrophe, which no one denies).

Carroll also charges that there is an ongoing evangelical infiltration of the U.S. military (Church supported military-industrial complex) and that this has had negative consequences for U.S. foreign policy.

 

The film's final chapter, "No War is Holy," concludes with views of military cemeteries as Aaron Neville sings "With God On Our Side." [Perhaps the film budget did not allow for "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition."]

U.N. on Catholic Church's child sexual abuse

Gay priests rape our boys? Who am I to judge?

The United Nations has issued its harshest condemnation to date of the Catholic Church cover-up of child molestations by priests.

 

In a new report, the U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child says the Vatican has consistently placed its reputation above the welfare of child sexual abuse victims. Panel chair Kirsten Sandberg said the Vatican has enabled a culture of impunity that has wronged tens of thousands of children. Kirsten Sandberg:

"With regard to child sexual abuse committed by members of the Catholic churches who operate under the authority of the Holy See, that is, clerics who have been involved in the sexual abuse of tens of thousands of children worldwide, the main finding of the committee was that the Holy See has adopted policies and practices which have led to the continuation of the abuse by and the impunity of the perpetrators. The Holy See has consistently placed the preservation of the reputation of the church and the protection of the perpetrators above children’s best interests."

The U.N. report calls on the Vatican to hand over alleged or known abusers to law enforcement worldwide and release its entire archive on child sex abuse cases.

After Emperor Constantine the Great converted to Christianity in the 4th century, a serious effort was made to compile a Christian Bible, one that included both the Hebrew scriptures (Old Testament) and emerging Christian manuscripts (New Testament). It took another 40 years before a final list of New Testament books was officially canonized by the church. Many of the most popular were excluded. Upon examination today, many of these writings attempt to resolve inconsistencies and questions raised from reading the Bible.

The Monroe Doctrine is a policy of the United States introduced in1823 that stated that further efforts by European nations to colonize land or interfere with states in North or South America would be viewed as acts of aggression, requiring U.S. intervention. The doctrine was issued at a time when nearly all Latin American colonies of Spain and Portugal had achieved or were at the point of gaining independence from the Portuguese Empire and Spanish Empire. Peru consolidated their independence in 1824, and Bolivia would become independent in 1825, leaving only Cuba and Puerto Rico [now under de facto American control with Guantanamo and semi-statehood] under Spanish rule. The US, working in agreement with Britain, wanted to guarantee that no European power would move in. It was the USA's time to colonize the world (beginning, it seems, with Mexico and the Philippines).

A few years ago I was teaching in another city, and the person who was to be my host telephoned me in advance to see if I had any special food requirements. I appreciated his concern and explained my eating preferences. I also mentioned that I don't normally eat much for breakfast but that I do like coffee in the morning.

He replied, in a very surprised voice, "You drink coffee?" I realized I had just made a heretical confession. I needed to do some fast mind scrambling to find a graceful way to explain to my host (without losing my spiritual stature) that I do, indeed, drink coffee.

There are some peculiar notions about what constitutes "being spiritual." I have a cartoon on the wall of my office that shows two people having dinner in a restaurant. One of them is saying to the other, "It's such a relief to meet someone who isn't on a spiritual question." I agree. There is an enormous possibility of getting sidetracked into self-conscious holiness, of putting energy into acting the part of a "spiritual person."

Outside of the US, football doesn't matter. But futbol (soccer) means the world.

A dear friend of mine, as he has become more and more established as a meditation teacher, has become less and less hesitant about telling people he loves football games. He even admits he gets very excited about the games, cheering at his television set as if he were sitting in the stadium.
 

No dispassionate attitude of "May the best man win" for him! I know he has a wonderful level of understanding, and he behaves like a regular person in a regular world. Being a meditator and developing equanimity do not mean becoming weird.
