God is love? Not in the early Bible (video)

Wisdom Quarterly; Shalom Auslander Judeo-Christian God in Foreskin's Lament memoir

4. And the Lord said unto Moses,
"This is the land I promised you,
but you shall not enter. Psych."

5. And Moses died.

DEUTERONOMY
Please, Almighty, don't kill me.
1. When I was a child, my parents and teachers told me about a man who was very strong. They told me he could destroy the whole world. They told me he could lift mountains. They told me he could part the sea. It was important to keep the man happy. When we obeyed what the man had commanded, the man liked us. He liked us so much that he killed anyone who didn't like us. But when we didn't obey what he had commanded, he didn't like us. He hated us. Some days he hated us so much, he killed us; other days, he let other people kill us. We call these days "holidays." On Purim, we remembered how the Persians tried to kill us. On Passover, we remembered how the Egyptians tried to kill us. On Chanukah, we remembered how the Greeks tried to kill us.

—Blessed is He, we prayed.
  • Buddhism and the God-Idea (PDF)
  • My religious education in brief: First Christianity (all of the Abrahamic faiths) tells us, "This is sin, that is sin, and all that over there is sin. Don't do any of those! You're free to go, have fun, but remember: If you do do any them, you had better feel afraid and guilty because, you just wait, you're going to get it! Welcome to Earth. That's just the way it is. Merry Christmas, motherf----r!"
Thou shalt fear, read this book, and obey it!
As bad as these punishments could be, they were nothing compared to the punishments meted out to us by the man himself. Then there would be famines. Then there would be floods. Then there would be furious vengeance. Hitler might have killed the Jews, but this man drowned the world. This was the song we sang about him in kindergarten: "God is here, God is there, God is truly everywhere!."

Then snacks, and a fitful nap.

I was raised like a veal in the Orthodox Jewish town of Monsey, New York, where it was forbidden to eat veal together with dairy. Having eaten veal, one was forbidden to eat dairy for six hours; having eaten dairy, one was forbidden to eat veal for three hours. One was forbidden to eat pig forever, or at least until the Messiah arrived; it was then, Rabbi Napier had taught us in the fourth grade, that the wicked would be punished, the dead would be resurrected, and pigs would become kosher.

—Yay! I said, high-fiving my best friend, Dov.

—You should be so excited, said Rabbi Napier, peering with disgust over the top of his thick horn-rimmed glasses, —on the Day of God's Judgment.

Cut it, or you're not kosher. (GR)
The people of Monsey were terrified of God, and they taught me to be terrified of Him, too — they taught me about a woman named Sarah who would giggle, so He made her barren; about a man named Job who was sad and asked, —Why?, so God came down to the Earth, grabbed Job by the collar, and howled, —Who the f*ck do you think you are?; about a man named Moses, who escaped from Egypt, and who roamed through the desert for forty years in search of a Promised Land, and whom God killed just before he reached it—face-plant on the one-yard line—because Moses had sinned, once, forty years earlier. His crime? Hitting a rock. And so, in early autumn, when the leaves choked, turned colors, and fell to their deaths, the people of Monsey gathered together in synagogues across the town and wondered, aloud and in unison, how God was going to kill them: —Who will live and who will die, they prayed, —
  • who at his predestined time and who before his time,
  • who by water and who by fire,
  • who by sword,
  • who by beast,
  • who by famine,
  • who by thirst,
  • who by storm,
  • who by plague,
  • who by strangulation, and
  • who by stoning.
Then lunch, and a fitful nap.

Man, they had it rough. So actually I helped God.
It is Monday morning, six weeks after my wife and I learned that she is pregnant with our first child, and I am stopped at a traffic light. The kid doesn't have a chance. It's a trick. I know this God; I know how He works. The baby will be miscarried, or die during childbirth, or my wife will die during childbirth, or they'll both die during childbirth, or neither of them will die and I'll think I'm in the clear, and then on the drive home from the hospital, we'll collide head-on with a drunk driver and they'll both die later, my wife and child, in the emergency room just down the hall from the room where only minutes ago we stood so happy and alive and full of promise.

That would be so God. More

Corrupt police go on trial in Los Angeles

Grab her! She's wearing a wire! She's wearing a wire! She's wearing an underwire bra!

She's packing some kind of baggies with gel... Drugs, drugs! It's not sexual assault if I'm wearing a badge. (Occupy My Boobs/lareviewofbooks.org/Ben Ehrenreich et al./tumblr)
MA woman with the sense to record her cop encounter on her cell phone is now facing felony wiretapping charges for not informing them. (What if they had broken the law on tape?) Karen Dziewit was drinking outside an apartment building. Residents complained that she was yelling at them and refused to calm down. More

LA jail scandal: 1st of 20 indicted sheriff's deputies faces trial
Staff Photos
Rina Palta (KPCC)
The first of 20 [criminal] deputies charged in a sweeping investigation into corruption and civil rights violations in L.A.'s county jails goes to trial today.

James Sexton is charged with obstruction of justice related to an incident involving an [L.A. Jail] inmate working as an FBI informant.

According to prosecutors, a group of deputies learned an inmate at Men's Central Jail, Anthony Brown, was working as an informant for the FBI. The FBI was investigating [police] corruption -- such as deputies smuggling contraband into the jails -- and civil rights violations that included deputies beating inmates.

Turn around, I beat your faces, m-f'ers!
[This would amount to felony assaults under color of uniform, conspiracy, gang affiliation in that Sheriff deputies have formed a criminal gang among themselves, attempted murder, witness tampering, and torture of captives, which is a "crime against humanity" in the eyes of the International Court of Justice even if condoned by American courts].

Prosecutors say when deputies learned Brown was an informant, they interviewed him, took his cell phone away, and "fudged" records to make it look like he had been released from jail.

Meanwhile, Brown was being moved from jail to jail under a false name [kidnapping, false imprisonment, conspiracy, witness tampering, falsification of records].

Sexton is accused of helping falsify records, keeping watch over the hidden inmate, and denying access to FBI agents who arrived at the jail to talk with Brown.

You want Tibet, S.O.B., I'll give you Tibet!
He later approached the FBI with his concerns over the episode, but nevertheless was charged as part of a larger obstruction of justice case against seven deputies allegedly involved in hiding Brown.

Sexton's defense attorneys are expected to argue that he was following orders from higher ups [criminal conspiracy], that he was unaware he was being investigated when he cooperated with the FBI, and that he did not intend to obstruct justice, as evidenced by his later cooperation with federal authorities.

The remaining six deputies in the case are expected to go to trial when Sexton's trial concludes. LISTEN (0:51 secs)

Police state
Sheriff Lee Baca stepped down abruptly earlier this year, not to avoid charges being brought against him or anything...but, well, sort of to avoid charges. He was seen recently walking around as a free man attending the blessing for Pasadena's planned Armenian Genocide Memorial, which ironically commemorates a holocaust and torture perpetrated by Turks while he as Sheriff for term after term perpetrated crimes against humanity with impunity. He didn't know. How would a boss know? It must have been "rogue elements" under him. Yeah, that's it! The other police did it! He can't be held responsible for covering up for them...if he can prove he didn't know. Yes, sure, maybe he should have known, but if he can prove that he did not... Well, now we see why he had to leave office. If he were charged and held, a standing Sheriff would be thrown in the very jail system he runs. And what kind of justice is there in that? If he gets thrown in one he ran, well that's more acceptable to keep up the front that Los Angeles police are here to serve and protect everyone. They are here to "protect" only a very few and to "serve" banking interests and other conservatives who give them money. And taxes from citizens don't count. They just don't, so don't try to bring that up.

The horrors of Syria's police state (audio)

Strike terrorists then starve 'em!
After more than three years of war in Syria, we have all seen plenty of photos of bombed out neighborhoods, piles of rubble, and dead civilians.

But for those of us peering into these distant, man-made disaster zones from the outside, it is easy to forget that these scenes of destruction are also still home to many people.

Tom Tomorrow (thismodernworld.com)
And some of them are facing a relentlessly grim situation. The Yarmouk district of Damascus (the capital of Syria) has been home to Palestinian refugee families going all the way back to the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. Additional waves of refugees helped the area grow into a busy residential and commercial section of the Syrian capital, where about 150,000 Palestinians lived alongside Syrians. But no longer.

I myself, I'm innocent, I tell ya. I did nuthin.
Today in Yarmouk more than 20,000 people find themselves under a punishing siege that began nearly a year ago. The fighting has made it impossible for them to get out. Residents do leave their hiding places most days -- hoping to find some food being handed out by aid groups.

The BBC's Lyse Doucet just returned from a visit to Yarmouk, and she says starvation is being used as a weapon of war against this besieged section of the Syrian capital.

Syrian graffiti, Pres. Al-Assad
“Even in wars there are rules,” Doucet said from Beirut. “One of the rules is that civilian populations should not be punished. It's happening every day in Syria."

Doucet accompanied aid workers with UNRWA, the United Nations refugee agency for Palestinian refugees, delivering emergency food aid to people in Yarmouk. She described the road leading into the district as a “ghostly corridor,” and said the level of human suffering she saw was shocking.

Al-Assad is your friend, citizen!
“There was a tide of people waiting in this narrow alleyway,” said Doucet, a veteran war correspondent. “No matter how many images you see uploaded on YouTube and other social media sites, no matter how many photographs you see, it does not prepare you for the shock of this, when you actually enter and see it with your own eyes.” More

A Buddhist Response to Contemporary Dilemmas of Human Existence
Bhikkhu Bodhi (accesstoinsight.org)
American scholar Ven. Bodhi
What does it mean "contemporary dilemmas"? It does not refer explicitly to the momentous social and political problems of our time -- global poverty, ethnic hostility, overpopulation, AIDS, the suppression of human rights, environmental ruin, and so on.

These problems are symptoms or offshoots of a more fundamental dilemma, one which is essentially spiritual in nature.

Our root problem is at its core a problem of consciousness. It is a fundamental existential dislocation, with cognitive and ethical dimensions. That is, it involves both a disorientation in our understanding of reality and a distortion (inversion) of the proper scale of values. That scale follows from a correct understanding of reality.

Because our root problem is one of consciousness, any viable solution must be framed in terms of transformation.

Anthology of sutras (Bodhi)
It requires an attempt to arrive at an accurate grasp of the human situation and a turning of the mind and heart in a new direction, one commensurate with this new understanding, one that brings light and peace rather than strife and distress.

Religion might have a response to the outstanding dilemmas of our age, but first let us propose a critique of the existential dislocation that has spread among such a significant portion of humankind.

Through most of this century, the religious point of view has been defensive. It may now be the time to go on the offensive by scrutinizing closely the dominant modes of thought that lie at the base of our spiritual malaise.

The problem of existential dislocation is integrally tied to the worldwide ascendancy of a type of mentality that originates in the West. But today it has become typical of human civilization as a whole. It would be too simple to describe this frame of mind as "materialism." First of all, those who adopt it do not invariably subscribe to materialism as a philosophical point of view. Second, obsession with material progress is not the defining characteristic of this outlook, only a secondary manifestation.

To coin a single expression conveying its distinctive essence, let us call it the "radical secularization" of human life.

The Historical Background
The underlying historical cause of this phenomenon seems to lie in an unbalanced development of the human mind in the West, beginning around the time of the European Renaissance. This development gave increasing importance to the rational, manipulative, and dominating capacities of the mind at the expense of its intuitive, comprehensive, sympathetic, and integrative capacities. Hitler escaped; Iran claims USA-UFO contact

Wisdom Quarterly; FARS News; HuffingtonPost.com; Exopolitics.com; Coasttocoastam.com
The US has continued policies and military plans established by Germany under Hitler.
"The Book Thief" follows the life of a girl looking at the Holocaust and WW II from the inside out.

Mining conspiracy theory peddling websites based in the United States, Iran’s semi-official FARS News Agency published a series of bizarre claims attributing them to Edward Snowden's NSA leaks on Sunday.

A first report published by the news agency over the weekend claimed that documents analyzed by the Russian intelligence services "prove" that U.S. policy is driven by an "alien/extraterrestrial intelligence agenda."

The NSA’s electronic surveillance is designed to cover up the alien conspiracy, the report continues, while elite humans along with one or more groups of extraterrestrials plan for world domination.

NSA damage control?
Spy Snowden? (Barton Gellman/Getty Images)
A few hours later FARS published a new story on aliens and the NSA, but this time the aliens were portrayed as the victims.

According to this second FARS report, Edward Snowden is unconsciously transmitting subliminal messages about a "false flag" plot to weaponize space. The report adds that the PRISM surveillance system collects UFO contact data, with the goal of creating a future false "alien invasion" to justify space wars and, ultimately, domination of the solar system. Hunting Hitler: Fuhrer survived WW II
Wall Street funded Hitler's rise to power in the 1930s. Why would US bankers back him? The post-Depression dream of Wall Street financiers was for the rebuilding of industrial manufacturing in Europe. Hitler was copying Ford's design for a car (the folks' wagon). Harvard's Dr. Jerome Corsi has turned up a great deal of stunning research on the beginnings of the military-industrial complex, what Franco referred to as "fascism" -- the melding of state and corporate powers.
