U.S. bombing Buddhist Laos (video)

Fifty years ago this month, the United States began raining down bombs on Laos [a landlocked Theravada Buddhist nation in Southeast Asia near Vietnam, China, Thailand, Burma, and Cambodia], in what would become the largest bombing campaign in history.

From June 1964 to March 1973, the United States dropped at least two million tons of bombs on the small, landlocked southeast Asian country. That is the equivalent of one planeload every eight minutes, 24 hours a day, for nine years -- more than was dropped on Germany and Japan during World War II.

40 years after secret U.S. war in Laos, millions of bomblets (seen here) keep killing

This part of the deadly legacy of the U.S. War on Vietnam lives on: In a sense the bombing continues today because of unexploded cluster bombs (scattering bomblets), which had about a 30 percent failure rate when they were thrown from American planes over large swaths of Laos.

Experts estimate that Laos today is littered with as many as 80 million "bombies" or bomblets -- baseball-sized bombs designed into cluster bombs to scatter on impact to kill long after the initial bombing.

Since the initial bombing stopped four decades ago, tens of thousands of people have been injured, maimed, and killed as a result. Democracy Now! is joined by Karen Coates and Jerry Redfern, co-authors of Eternal Harvest: The Legacy of American Bombs in Laos (eternalharvestthebook.com).

Journalists and Snowden expose NSA (video)

Journalists exposing NSA (zimbio)
Months ago, Laura Poitras and Glenn Greenwald (The Intercept) flew from New York to Hong Kong to meet NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Poitras and Greenwald did not return to the US until Friday when they flew from Berlin to NY to accept the George Polk Award for National Security Reporting. They arrived not knowing if they would be detained or subpoenaed after Director of National Intelligence James Clapper described journalists working on NSA stories as Snowden’s "accomplices." At a news conference following the ceremony, Poitras and Greenwald took questions from reporters about their reporting and the U.S. government intimidation it has sparked. More

Obama: Yes to NSA's unconstitutional spying
In their first return to the US since exposing the NSA’s mass surveillance operations, the Intercept journalists were honored in NYC on Friday. They play key roles in reporting the massive trove of documents leaked by Snowden.

They were joined by colleagues Ewen MacAskill of The Guardian and Barton Gellman of The Washington Post, with whom they shared the award. In their acceptance speeches, they paid tribute to their source: "Each one of these awards just provides further vindication that what [Snowden] did in coming forward was absolutely the right thing to do and merits gratitude, and not indictments and decades in prison," Greenwald said. "None of us would be here...without the fact that someone decided to sacrifice [his] life to make this information available," Poitras said. "And so this award is really for Edward Snowden."

The U.S. President has no clothes! (comedy)

Ashley Wells, Pfc. Sandoval, Wisdom Quarterly; Jeremy Scahill, Amy Goodman, Nermeen Shaikh (DemocracyNow.org, New York); Kshama Sawant, Mitch Jeserich (KPFA, Berkeley)
It doesn't really matter what I say. It's all subject to revision and White Out (TW). Obama, like Bush before him and everyone after, is a puppet. Who really wields the power? The MIC

Even I could read a prompter. - Pointin' is cool. - If only I could tell Obi how much I agree.

A breakdown of Pres. Obama's Newspeak and nonsense with Jeremy Scahill (Democracy Now!)

Look, Jo/Jo, I'm movin' further to the right.
G.W. Bush was as terrible liar, whereas President B.S. Obama is a great one. Let's give the devilish man his due: He is a great speaker, a great orator, and a pretty good pacifier. If only what he said were true.

Scahill: "drone president," NSA whitewash
Some is. Unfortunately, it has proven to be the stuff we would never let Dub'ya and Dick get away with -- depriving Americans of peace, privacy, prosperity, civil liberties... What do we get instead?
Shut up, Jeremy, I'm warning you.
Executive order drone assassinations, business-as-usual banking, indefinite detentions, illegal NSA surveillance, Department of Homeland Harassment, police shootings, police beatings, a war on whistleblowers, a crumbling "permanent-war" economy, weather modification, environmental degradation, electrical and frequency pollution, oil and chemical spills, joblessness, corporate control of policies and politics and, well, other than that, everything's great.

VIDEO: The many FUNNY faces of Jo Boehner behind Barry Obama

Bush, Cheney families love Obama policies
Poor Jo Biden. Poorer Jo Boehner sitting back there trying not to roll his eyes seeing his political party mate speak so eloquently. Yes, all three are in the same party with its two nearly identical wings, one moderate, one extreme right. The 99% has got to learn to start taking direction from the 1%, or the dogs, paramilitary troops, water canons, spies, agent provocateurs, and batons are going to have to be sent in. Hey, you, OBEY! Or else.

What will cure right-wing extremism from the Republocrats?

Kshama Sawant, Seattle's Socialist
Socialist Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant ripped not only Pres. Obama’s State of the Union speech Tuesday, but the Democrats and Republicans alongside him as he delivered it.

We bow to the same MIC masters.
“We will make progress only on the basis of a fundamental and systematic change,” Sawant said in a response on behalf of the Socialist Party.

“We need a break from the policies of Wall Street and corporate America. We need a break from capitalism. It has failed the 99 percent. Both parties bow down before the free market and loyally serve the interests of their corporate masters, with the only difference being in matter of degree. The political system is completely dysfunctional, and it’s broken.”

Yeah, we golf. Obama and Boehner (WP)
Sawant, who in November of 2013 became the first socialist elected to office in Seattle in 50 years, also criticized Pres. Obama’s remarks vowing to fight income inequality, saying he was prodded by public demonstrations staged by fast-food workers and others... More

"Military-Industrial Complex" = JSOC (video)

What is the US MIC (military-industrial complex)? These militants are called JSOC.

Dirty Wars: Jeremy Scahill and Rick Rowley expose secret U.S. wars
Two major military raids in the newer parts of the American empire, Somalia and Libya, this past weekend made headlines when American forces attempted to kill or capture individuals deemed to be linked with various Al Qaeda "affiliates" (i.e., any and everyone accused of anything).

The raid in Somalia was unsuccessful but in Libya, it resulted in the capture of Abu Anas Al-Libi, who unusually may be brought back to the US for trial in connection with the 1998 US embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania.
Dick Cheney lives on in cousin Obama
But who are the people (American terrorists, militants, warlords, Pentagon officials, CIA operatives) conducting these raids, and why are they acceptable to us the American public given that there is no congressional dialogue much less formal debate about them?

By attempting to answer this question, there came about a remarkable film called Dirty Wars: The WORLD is a Battlefield. Written by investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill and filmed and directed by filmmaker Richard Rowley, "Dirty Wars" explores the shadowy world of US military terror stemming from tens of thousands of night raids on civilians, uncounted collateral drone bombings, presidential kill-lists, and extrajudicial assassinations.

What started out as an investigation into a mysterious night raid in Gardez, Afghanistan, where innocent Afghan women and men were killed, ended up uncovering a covert force known as the Joint Special Operations Command or JSOC, which operates in countries like Yemen and Somalia (and anywhere around the world) where there has been no declaration of war.

Pretending Osama "Emmanuel Goldstein" bin Laden was still alive then assassinating him for a media win, then burying the evidence of the mistake at sea. CIA Psy Ops 1, World 0.

Mouthpiece for military-industrial complex
As Scahill and Rowley worked on the film, President Obama bragged about the assassination of Osama bin Laden, suddenly making JSOC one of the most talked about military units in the media.

What is most disturbing about the idea of a small unit of highly trained killers that answer directly to any president in the White House is that US citizens are being targeted, minors are being targeted, and some targets have actually committed no crime other than to exercise their right to free speech. 1984-style spying
In August, Lavabit became the first technology firm to shut down rather than disclose information to the U.S. government. Owner Ladar Levison closed his encrypted email company after refusing to comply with a government effort to tap his customers’ private information. It has now been confirmed the FBI was targeting National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden, who used Lavabit’s services. But Levison says that instead of just targeting Snowden, the government effectively wanted access to the accounts of 400,000 other Lavabit customers....
